"480 Minutes" - new Hold Steady, Lights On, Crystal Castles, Mates Of State

Well hello again, everyone. Happy almost summer -- yes, on Monday it will officially be summer here in the United States. Here in San Francisco, CA. it can be difficult to tell the seasons apart since our climate is temperate year-round...but we can always tell it's summer when the Slip 'N Slide commercials return to make the rounds.

The 31st SF Rumble is set for Wednesday, July 7th 2010 at Cafe du Nord and will feature live sets by A B and The Sea (Oakland), So Many Wizards (Los Angeles/Long Beach, CA), and What Laura Says (Tempe, AZ). RSVP here for free admission.

Today on 480 Minutes we will feature new music from The Cinnamon Band (Philadelphia, PA), The Constellations (Atlanta, GA), Crystal Castles (Toronto, Canada), Delta Spirit (San Diego, CA), Devo (Akron, OH), Fool's Gold (Los Angeles, CA), Frightened Rabbit (Selkirk, Scotland), Grand Lake (Oakland, CA), Here We Go Magic (Brooklyn, NY), The Hold Steady (Brooklyn, NY), Jews And Catholics (Winston-Salem, NC), Lights On (San Diego, CA), Lucy Bland (Seattle, WA), Mates Of State (CA, KS, CT), The One AM Radio (Los Feliz, CA), Punch Brothers (New York, NY), Regina (Helsinki, Finland), and Robyn (Stockholm, Sweden).

The new Mates Of State album, Crushes, is all cover versions. For me covers are always hit or miss (usually miss) with no middle ground. Not this time --there are a bunch of strong covers of good songs on this Mates of State self-produced release. Today's show will feature the best of the bunch -- one of which I expect, with time, will find a place on my list of all-time favorite cover versions.

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Check out the handy-dandy 480 Minutes Countdown clock atop the left column (above) to find out when the next episode will air.
