Pete Shelley, lead singer of The Buzzcocks, died yesterday at age 63. I loved the Buzzcocks. So many great 3-minute pop gems. I was fortunate enough to meet Shelley and the boys years ago at South By Southwest. He had a good laugh when I told him that when the jukebox included "Why Can't I Touch It?" (audio embedded below) that was the Buzzcocks song I always chose because it was the most cost-effective of the bunch at six and a half minutes long. It felt good to make him smile after all the smiles his songs had given me over the years. Here he is showing off his BAGeL Radio pin:
In other news, it's December. Not sure how that happened. I do not expect we're going to be ready for our year-end best-of show next Friday, December 14th, as planned. We may have to put it off until the 21st.
I was going to do a straw poll on just that subject to get an idea of how many people will have begun their winter vacations by 12/21, but Google seems to have yanked that functionality and I just don't have the energy at the moment to start messing around with HTML. Maybe I'll take an informal poll in the chat room.
Today's 480 Minutes program will include no new music because it's we are taking a couple of weeks off from reviewing submissions to make time and space to go back through our favorite songs and albums of the year and work up ranked lists. That process begins with raw numbers, and the secret sauce of subjectivity then becomes heavily involved.
The show is live-hosted from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time and is followed by 2 hours of uninterrupted music. The show is then rebroadcast in it's entirety beginning at 7 p.m., then again on Saturday at 5 a.m. and 3 p.m., and one final time on Sunday at 1 a.m., followed by a rebroadcast of this week's Fuzzy Road radio show at 11 a.m. and then a couple of old 480 Minutes episodes from this week in past years, so there will be hosted shows all weekend long.
