“480 Minutes” - Twenny Twenny Two

It’s twenny twenny two — do you know where representative democracy is? Why, it’s circling the drain, y’all, across the globe & right here in the U.S. of A. American democracy continued to backslide for the 5th straight year with more & more Americans believing more & more absurdities making them more & more easily manipulated into committing atrocities (h/t
Voltaire).

In more pleasant news, BAGeL Radio is now available on even more devices and our new website is beginning to look less like it was slapped together by a dull age 4 child. See for yourself at bagelradio.com. I realize that many of you are reading this there, but contemporaneously at least more of you are reading this via the old blog which I can’t seem to quit. My severely lacking design skills seem to fare better on the site than on the ancient blog, would you agree?

Getting down to the business of live-hosted internet radio, today is the first new episode of 480 Minutes of 2022. (Speaking of 2022, today I wrote the date including year by hand on a piece of paper — hold your applause, please, I’m not finished yet — and got…it…right!). OK, go ahead, you can cheer now. Today’s show will feature new music by Deap Vally (Los Angeles, CA, @DeapVally), Dmitry Wild (New York, NY, @DmitryWild), Inca Babies (Manchester, England, @IncaBabiesUK), Low Life (Sydney, Australia, @LowLifeSyd), Sprints (Dublin, Ireland, @SprintsMusic), Strange Colours (Chicago, IL), Wet Leg (Isle of Wight, England, @WetLegBand), & The Coathangers (Atlanta, GA, @TheCoathangers) covering Blondie (New York, NY, @BlondieOfficial).

A few updates with regard to BAGeL Radio’s transition from being part of the wonderful SomaFM to being an island unto itself we have a free Android app in the Google Play store with both an iOS & MacOS app to follow and, perhaps even an AppleTV app. In the meantime, iPhonies who use CarPlay can ask Siri to “play bagel radio on tune in [or whichever aggregator app you use]” and not only will the music begin, song info will display on your dashboard screen!

A standalone playlist history page is also in the works.

All-new BAGeL Radio merch is almost ready including t-shirts (men's and women's), hoodies, coffee mugs, back packs, sports bras, & more.

Tune in and chat with other members of our music discovery-obsessed community on Slack during the live-hosted hours.

Please subscribe to the (severely under-utilized thusfar) mailing list: https://bit.ly/BAGeLNews.

Although I am not recommending going to indoor live music gigs at this time while Omicron & The Variants are opening shows in venues across the globe, for future reference do check out the amazing gig-finding tool longtime listener Sergio made to help us all find live music events featuring artists played on BAGeL Radio.

"480 Minutes" - BAGeL Radio Top Music of 2021

Today's show is all about 2021 -- tune in to BAGeL Radio today to hear our top songs of 2021 -- today's playlist will be 2021 music all day (with a few songs released in 2020 which we missed or which arrived too late in 2020 for last year's lists).

Creating year-end lists is not an exact science, and this year we had to cobble together spin and listener count data from multiple sources making our starting point numbers even less exact. As always some things will not get the love they deserve and some things will unfairly fall through the cracks entirely. For this we apologize in advance.

The year-end top music show is always a lot of fun, and with the full-on BAGeL Bingo game for you to play along with, it is sure to be a blast. If you haven't downloaded your bingo card yet, hie thee over to:

https://bagelradio.com/bingo/

Download the card, fill it out with the names of the 24 songs (and corresponding artists) you expect to be in our top 50 countdown, then check them off as we go. If you want to be considered for the grand prize (bragging rights) you must submit your completed card via e-mail by 10 a.m. ET Friday 12/17/21 (yes, I've extended the deadline by 10 hours due to people being lazy popular demand. I know, I'm a softie).

The top songs of the year countdown will begin with song #50 at 11 a.m. Eastern U.S. Time. We should reach the top 10 at around 1:45 p.m. and finish up around 2:15 p.m. The rest of the show will consist of our 150 or so other favorite songs of the year including some of our favorite 2021 cover versions sprinkled throughout.

For the year-end best-of edition of 480 Minutes the show is extended to 12-hours. That means that the rebroadcasts will begin 2 hours later than usual and start up again every 12 hours on the 9s over the weekend.

Catch up on 2021 in one day! The show is full of holiday gift ideas (hint: music!) so keep a list and check it twice (that's what reruns are for!).

The show is live-hosted from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time, followed by 4 hours of uninterrupted music to accommodate as many excellent 2021 songs as we can.

Lists of our top songs and top albums will be published to bagelradio.com, the blog, and our socials...at some point.  Feel free to leave your lists in the comments, or e-mail them to bagelradio@gmail.com. Our past top music lists can be viewed at https://tinyurl.com/BAGeLTopTunes and the 2021 lists will be added to those...again, at some point.

Please consider donating to the station to help keep BAGeL Radio on the air and commercial free -- your generous support enables us to continue doing what we (and apparently a whole lot of you) love!

https://www.bagelradio.com/donate/

We will soon have a BAGeL Radio online store featuring brand new BAGeL Radio-branded merchandise. The store will likely go live just after y'all run out of money due to buying holiday gifts for loved ones, doormen, mail carriers, hair dressers, secret lovers, pets, etc.

The show will be rebroadcast tonight (Friday) starting at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, twice on Saturday 12/18 (9 a.m. and 9 p.m.) and twice on Sunday 12/19 (9 a.m. and 9 p.m.).

Import our program schedule into your favorite calendar program so you never miss a live-hosted show or rerun. Added bonus: the start times will be converted to your time zone!

"480 Minutes" - New Site! More Tickets!

8 hours of live-hosted indie rock noise pop AND a ticket giveaway AND a new website? Sign me up!

Check it out at bagelradio.com. It's lame-looking because I have zero design skills but it works and will be a lot better than this here ancient blog. Eventually. You can even stream the station right from the home page. So very high tech, right?

Today is the penultimate new episode of 480 Minutes of 2021. We have more tickets to give away to see Yo Kinky perform at The Mercury Lounge in NYC on 12/15/21 (travel expenses not included, sorry).

You can also buy tickets at https://tinyurl.com/YoKinkyMercLounge

We are still sorting through all of the new songs we aired on the station in 2021 in preparation for the year-end top-music episode of 480 Minutes next Friday, December 17th, 2021. The top 50-song countdown begins at 11am ET and ends/reaches #1 somewhere around 2:30pm. The rest of the show will include another 100 or so of our favorites of 2021. We take into account objective data including how many times songs/albums were played, how many people were listening when they were played (the data is admittedly less accurate than previous years due in part to separating from SomaFM), and finally we top off the data with Subjective Sauce™.

The results of this process are revealed during 480 Minutes next Friday, December 17th, 2021, with the top 50-song countdown beginning at 11am ET and ending somewhere around 2:30pm. The rest of the show will include another 100 or so of our favorites of 2021.

And you'd better believe there will be bingo! If you'd like to play along please download this card, print it out, fill it in with your 24 best guesses for what BAGeL Radio's top songs of the year will be, then get the completed card back to me (scanned or photographed) no later than 11:59pm Eastern U.S. Time on Thursday, December 16th for a chance to win...something. Perhaps a prototype of the new merch we are working on?

Right Click > Save Image As to download

A few updates with regard to the transition -- the Android app is now available in the Google Play store with both a Roku & iOS app to follow. Eventually (are you sensing a theme?).

The station is now available on just about every radio aggregator app that I am aware of and some are even displaying BAGeL Radio metadata so there are more ways to listen with track info than there were last week. A standalone playlist history page is also in the works.

All-new BAGeL Radio merch in the pipeline including t-shirts (men's and women's), hoodlies, coffee mugs, hats, g-strings, and more. The first sample coffee mug arrived this week and it looked pretty sweet next to Monday's bagel du jour:

"480 Minutes" - Ticket Giveaway

8 hours of live-hosted indie rock noise pop AND a ticket giveaway? Sign me up!

Today we are back with an all new episode of 480 Minutes featuring our first ticket giveaway in some time. We did these all the time when we were based in San Francisco, less so since relocating to NYC, and not at all since The Before Times. Tune in during the live-hosted hours (9am-5pm ET) and when you hear a Yo Kinky song be the first to get in touch via Slack or e-mail (contact info below) for a chance to win tickets to see Yo Kinky perform at The Mercury lounge on 12/15/21.

You can also buy tickets at https://tinyurl.com/YoKinkyMercLounge

With our annual Beatles Cleanse™complete, we have entered the sifting back through all of the new songs we aired on the station in 2021 to start ranking the top songs and albums of the year phase. We take into account objective data including how many times songs/albums were played, how many people were listening when they were played, and top all of the data off with our own secret sauce of subjectivity. This year we have the added challenges of a somewhat abbreviated Beatles Cleanse™ plus not having a complete data set as BAGeL Radio transitions from being part of the SomaFM collective to being its own thing again.

We reveal the results of the process during our year-end top music show which will be live-hosted two weeks from today: Friday, December 17th, 2021...and there will be bingo! Here's a sample card from last year:

Blank 2021 cards will be available for download at bagelradio.com next Friday, December 10th, 2021, and to be considered an official entries will need to be received no later than 11:59pm ET on Thursday December 16th.

A few updates with regard to the transition -- an Android app is in the works, a Roku app will follow the release of that one, and eventually someday maybe an iOS app, too. I am an Apple user so I want it to happen but Apple doesn't make it easy and right now there's too much to do to tackle unnecessarily difficult tasks that are not mission-critical.

The good news is TuneIn and several other radio aggregator apps are now displaying BAGeL Radio metadata so there are more ways to listen with track info than there were last week. You can always visit mystreamplayer.com/bagel to view that info regardless of what device you use to listen.

We still need someone with an Apple developer account to get that iOS app placed in the App Store and I could really use someone with good web design skills to help with the new BAGeL Radio site. Extra credit if you can provide a portfolio of sites you have designed, and double super secret credit if you have experience using Squarespace to build sites.

There is also all-new BAGeL Radio merch in the pipeline including t-shirts (men's and women's), hoodlies, coffee mugs, hats, g-strings, and more. I am expecting my first samples any day now.

No new music to debut today as we've reached that post-Thanksgiving reflective period of the year.

"480 Minutes" - Plea For Web Help

Hello there, BAGeL Radio listeners & friends.

In case you missed it, on Monday BAGeL Radio is now streaming independently of the SomaFM servers. In your mobile or desktop browser bookmark and click this link to launch the stream in a web player: https://live.mystreamplayer.com/bagel. For those who prefer direct stream links, you can find those here.

With the unexpected switch away from the streaming servers we've been using for 10+ years earlier this week, we are scrambling to get things up and running in a variety of areas as we chart our course away from our beloved nest of the past 10+ years.

We desperately need (1) someone with webmaster skills as well as (2) someone (else or could be the same person) with developer accounts at both Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

Please send an e-mail to bagelradio@gmail.com if you have such skills/accounts and would like to help us at this critical moment of our transition to becoming a stand-alone internet radio station. Thank you.

Today we will debut new music including songs by Cy Dune (Los Angeles, CA, @CyDuneSounds), Five Pence Game (San Sebastian, Spain, @FivePenceGame) IDLES (Bristol, England, @IdlesBand), Mandy, Indiana (Manchester, England) @MandyIndiana), and Pip Blom (Amsterdam, The Netherlands, @PipBlom).

"480 Minutes" - Melancholy Music

This week your host tried, really tried, to ignore the news. Doing so always makes me feel guilty, like I'm not doing my part as a citizen. American democracy is being undermined from the inside, those with the power to do something about it keep bringing pocket knives to gun fights (or not fighting at all, howzit hangin' congressional GOP?), and that reality is too much for me right now. Now that I've admitted this publicly and to myself I feel even worse about it.

Maybe that's why mostly melancholy submissions resonated with me this week.

Today we will debut new music including songs by The Clydes (New Brunswick, NJ, @TheClydesBand), The Kundalini Genie (Glasgow, Scotland, @KundaliniGenie), Nation of Language (Brooklyn, NY, @notionofanguish), Papercuts (San Francisco, CA, @papercuts_music), Radiohead (re-release, Oxford, England), Snail Mail (Ellicott City, MD, recently relocated to the East Village, NY, @SnailMail), and SWIIMS (Toronto, Canada, @SWiiMS_MUSIC1).

"480 Minutes" - Democracy Undermined

Here in the U.S. one of the two main political parties wants to build roads, protect the planet for future generations, and keep a global pandemic in check; the other wants to arm everyone, pretend systemic racism doesn't exist, force unwanted births, and [holy shit!] block Medicare from collectively negotiating drug prices so Americans can stop paying an average of 3.5 times the price for the same brand name drugs as the rest of the world. What is that about?

Even after the unconscionable post-Charlottesville comments, the Helsinki/Putin Public Felatio Incident, the Ukraine abuse of power for personal political gain, the election lies, the insurrection, the actual coup attempt by the guy who lost the election, Gilead & Little Gilead (the states formerly known as Texas and Ohio), there are still Americans who vote Republican. This is astounding. And terrifying.

Most congressional Republicans have signed on to the madness and continue pushing the election lies. Most of the rest are complicit in their silence and inaction. Seemingly a switch was flipped making the entire GOP full-on autocratic overnight.  Of course it wasn't overnight, the skids were greased by decades of FOX News/televangelist/Rush Limbaugh lies softening the brains of and radicalizing the GOP rank and file to the point that most are now unquestioning supplicants of a wannabe facist. Considering the reality denial regarding race, climate change, the insurrection, the outright criminality of the previous administration, and the COVID pandemic (which has now claimed 750K+ in the U.S. and 5M+ worldwide), it is most certainly a massive collective psychosis.

We need to figure out how to reverse this trend fast because it is rapidly reversing decades of societal progress on many fronts. The GOP tried for years to take away healthcare (repeal and replace!), is successfully rolling back womens' rights, working to make it legal for just about anyone to carry a gun anywhere, making a mockery of the courts (see the judge in the Kyle Rittenhouse case and the jury in the Ahmaud Arbery case, and, oh yeah, undermining democracy.

Dangerous waters, these. Suggestions?

Keep current on all things BAGeL by subscribing to our new mailing list: https://bit.ly/BAGeLNews.

Today we will debut new music including songs by The High Water Marks (US/Norway, @TheHWMs), The Parrots (Madrid, Spain, @TheParrotsBand), and a previously unreleased Radiohead song. Yes, that's it. It was not a week for strong submissions. Well, it might have been, but so much arrived as low bit rate, and/or in the wrong format, and/or missing metadata...we'll never know.

When I was a kid I listened to a lot of radio. My favorite DJs played my favorite songs and shared stories about seeing the bands perform and meeting the band members...radio was the greatest. The DJ was my friend who was "in the know" when it came to music, made me feel closer to the music, helped me to understand what it meant and sometimes revealed that it meant different things to different people, which was a special kind of eye-opening cool.

That type of radio has been devalued in the post radio consolidation era that saw Clear Channel (now the cutesy iHeart Radio), Entercom, and Cumulus buy up something like half of the radio stations in the country over the course of about 5 years. This consolidation and streamlining (that is having some bean counter in Denver programming dozens of stations across the country making redundant dozens of music-loving radio programmers) reduced the radio dial to a handful of cookie cutter formats with cookie cutter playlists. Sad.

It seems that even the music industry has lost sight of the promotional value of radio, maybe because there are so few (if any) slots allotted for new music each week on commercial stations. An example of how things have changed: we used to get records weeks in advance of their release. Recently, after spending 2 months excitedly counting down on air to Parquet Courts release day, that day came and there was no record for me to share with you. I felt like I'd let you all down. The album finally arrived here 4 business days after it was released, so I will get to share songs from it with you today, but seriously, labels/promo folks, I don't know what you're thinking waiting until after the thing is available to send out promo copies; if there is a reason, please fill me in.

Props to the few independent terrestrial and internet stations still making a go of it, supporting local and new and niche music, giving voice to thoughtful and/or entertaining personalities, expanding listeners' minds...hang on as long as you can. Some day the powers that be will realize what has been lost and hopefully enough of us who remember will still be around to bring it back.

And now for something completely different: web ads placed over the text I'm trying to read is a surefire way to get me to stop reading your content and never return. I know the bills have to be paid, but ruining the user experience may not be the best long-term business strategy. Then again, it has worked for Facebook...

"480 Minutes" - Untogether

Last week I described the in-process spinning-off of BAGeL Radio from SomaFM as a band member going solo. In retrospect I think a more apt analogy might be the situation that arises when good friends decide to divorce. Sometimes people grow apart. Sometimes one would be better off without the other. That doesn't mean they don't still love each other, but drastic changes are required nonetheless. You may have been friends with one first, but over the years you came to love them both, making the split both confusing and difficult. This one doesn't need to be -- both sides still are friends with each other and with you! So, on 1/1/22 you will not find BAGeL Radio in the SomaFM mobile app, desktop app, nor on the website. You will always be able to find BAGeL Radio via bagelradio.com, however, and we will work with you to make sure you can stream through your preferred device.

If you have not yet done so please sign up for our mailing list to keep on top od all things BAGeL including ways you can help once we are flying solo: https://bit.ly/BAGeLNews.

Lately you may have noticed weirdness with the metadata at times. It is likely a result of our experimenting with streaming options. I'm afraid that there's not much I can do about it and expect there to be further such issues as the end of the year approaches. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Sadly either the label, the promo company, or some combination thereof decided to not send us a review copy of the new Parquet Courts album as of the time of this writing/show prep. As the old saying goes, "Oh well."

So...how's your week going?

Today we will debut a bevy of new music including songs by Black Marble (Brooklyn, NY, @blackmarblenyc), Bodega (New York, NY, @enterbodega), Dean Wareham (Los Angeles, CA, @WarehamDean), Dinner (Copenhagen, Denmark, @DinnerXDinner), Furrows (Brooklyn, NY, @FurrowsBand), Gone To Color (Undisclosed U.S. location, @GoneToColor), Liily (Los Angeles, CA, @LiilyTheBand), Sprints (Dublin, Ireland, @SprintsMusic), and Surfbort (Brooklyn, NY, @SurfBortion).

"480 Minutes" - Going Solo

Don't you hate it when a member of a band you love announces they are "going solo?" Too often the exiting band member flops on their own, or the band flops having not realized how important the ejected member was...the hubris is apparent and it just sucks for everyone.

Then there are occasions when such splits work out well for everyone. Fingers crossed this is one of those times:

BAGeL Radio is going solo. We had a marvelous 10-year run working with SomaFM (following about 7 years of trying to convince them to let us in the door!), and now the time has come to find out if BAGeL Radio can sink or swim out in the world on its own.

To be clear: SomaFM isn't going anywhere, it will continue to operate as we've known and loved it for decades now, it will just be a bit more streamlined to begin the new year.

This is an amicable split with no hard feelings. We love everything about SomaFM. BAGeL Radio was incredibly fortunate to be part of the SomaFM family, without which we most likely would not be looking ahead to celebrating our 19th (!) year of existence on February 1st, 2022.

The remainder of 2021 will be a transition period as we try out various streaming modes and methods, what merch to create and where, and all sorts of exciting new challenges. It's not at all clear what BAGeL Island will look like, but we'll keep you apprised of new developments here on bagelradio.com and (going back to our roots!) via our new mailing list, and oh hey speakiing of which, please sign up for our mailing list that will definitely not SPAM you ever no way no how no not I: https://bit.ly/BAGeLNews.

We ask for both your patience with and feedback on these trial runs as we figure out how to make this work.

TL;DR (fka "in summary"):

-SomaFM will no longer carry BAGeL Radio content as of 1/1/22

-the SomaFM store is already no longer carrying BAGeL Radio merch

-BAGeL Radio loves, respects, and is forever grateful to SomaFM for too many things to list now, maybe someday we'll get to all of those ways when memoir-writing commences.

Back to the present: thanks for all of the concern about your host's teeth. The good news: turns out the tooth which had previously undergone root canal surgery is just fine! The not-so-good news: the tooth behind it needs a root canal.

So...how's your week going?

Today we will debut a bevy of new music including songs by Corridor (Montreal, Canada, @CorridorMTL), Guided By Voices (Dayton, OH, @_GuidedByVoices), The Greeting Committee (Kansas City, KS, @TheGCBand), Kundalini Genie (Glasgow, Scotland, @KundaliniGenie), Lala Lala (Chicago, IL, @LalaLalaMusic), and Pond (Perth, Australia, @PondBand).
