"480 Minutes" 4/6/07

I have heard some encouraging things this week, but I'm still not sure how this whole copyright royalty rates thing is going to play out. It does seem that even though the mainstream media often includes false and/or misleading quotes (mostly from SoundExchange), the tone and content overall has been accurate. That is a big win for smallwebcasters, since SoundExchange has been all PR and lawyered-up, birthing propoganda as press releases. I had a productive discussion with Tim Westergren of Pandora and Rusty Hodge of SomaFM, which made me see the situation a little differently -- since this is clearly bad for everyone, maybe SoundExchange didn't actually expect to get everything it asked for and more (rates retroactive to 1/1/06). Maybe they were shooting for the moon figuring the Copyright Royalty Board would hear the arguments on the other side, realize that keeping internet radio alive and independent is in the public interest, and return with a compromise ruling.

For those of you who like your information in the form of bullet points, this site does a pretty succinct breakdown of what is going on in with the RIAA's attempt ( to crush internet radio.

In other news, we'll have new music today from dntel, Kings of Leon, Patrick Wolf, Powersolo (hillbilly stomp from Denmark), Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, The Airborne Toxic Event, and a new Frightened Rabbit demo.

Please tune in for my weekly marathon, "480 Minutes," today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time and request songs and stuff via:
