"480 Minutes" - Planned Rerun

While we're attending the Digital Music Forum: East conference this week, tune in for a planned rerun of previously broadcast 480 Minutes episodes.

This week I was fortunate enough to attend the 10th San Francisco Music Tech Summit and am happy to report that the tenor of the music/tech discussion appears to have changed.  With each summit the speakers, panelists, and attendees seem less tied to the old music business model of selling shiny plastic discs (while ripping off the artists who created the art) while moving more towards a future of streaming media and subscription services.

Still, the RIAA continues doing hateful shit like pushing bad legislation, pressuring Google to stop doing what it does, maintaining misguided monopolistic middle-men like SoundExchange to ensure that most revenues get funneled to them and not to artists, and stomping on legitimate businesses they don't like...but the tide is clearly turning against them.  It was the most encouraging music/tech conference I've been to yet -- as you've read here many times before, the music industry is fine and dandy, it's the paleolithic recorded music industry that's in trouble.

There is a good write-up of SF MusicTech X over on Hypebot.

Next week is the Digital Media Forum East conference...if I can find a cheap flight to NYC, I'll be there, too!

"480 Minutes" - New Little Barrie, Little Ghosts

Hello and welcome to another edition of 480 Minutes.  This edition took a bit more work to construct than most, as we received over 600 songs this week.  Yes, 600.  As in 50 12-song albums.  Or 120 5-song EPs.  Or 300 singles (with b-sides).  In reality, it was a combination thereof.  Lotta music, I tell you what.
Anyway, out of those 600 songs we found a few we think you'll like including new music by Band of Skulls (Southampton, England), Charlotte Gainsbourg (London, England), Coast Jumper (San Francisco, CA), Craig Finn (The Hold Steady), Creep (Brooklyn, NY), Dirty Ghosts (San Francisco, CA), The Hoot Hoots (Seattle, WA), Isidore (Sydney, Australia/Los Angeles, CA), Jack White (Nashville, TN), The KABBS (San Diego, CA), Little Barrie (London, England), The Magnetic Fields (Boston, MA), Mwahaha (Oakland, CA), of Montreal (Athens, GA), Pink Mink (Minneapolis, MN), Pontiak (Virginia Hills, VA), Shearwater (Austin, TX), Thundamentals (Blue Mountains, Australia), and The Twilight Sad (Kilsyth, Scotland).

As always the show is hosted live and in-person from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific Time.  Please get in touch during those hours with your requests, comments, and all-time favorite omelets:

"480 Minutes" - Everyone Living In Brooklyn Is In A Band

During today's show we have a Bay Area Ticket Giveaway - tune in to win tickets to the Saturday nigh show at Bottom of the Hill featuring Birdmonster, Sorryeverafter, and IFFG.  Buy advance tickets here.

Nothing much to talk about.  President Obama went out there and pretty much told it like it is, yet many who watch FAUX News think he was lying, because the "facts" they are fed, loudly and often, do not reflect the reality-based world.  But I digress....

While we all still have our internet privilege (no thanks to the Congresscritters behind SOPA/PIPA, and let's not forget the even stinkier ACTA), let's get to some music, shall we?  Hello and welcome to 480 Minutes, the weekly marathon live hosted radio show highlighting the newest BAGeL Radio playlist additions, of which there are many again today.

This week we will debuting new music by Barry Adamson (Manchester, England), The Black Belles (Nashville, TN), The D.A. (El Paso, TX), Coasting (Brooklyn, NY), Good Field (Austin, TX),  Guards (San Diego, CA), The Knocks (New York, NY), Matthew Dear (Detroit, MI), A Place To Bury Strangers (Brooklyn, NY), Porcelain Raft (Brooklyn via London via Rome), Royal Baths (Brooklyn, NY), Trailer Trash Tracys (London, England),

As always the show is hosted live and in-person from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific Time.  Please get in touch during those hours with your requests, comments, and favorite Republican ever:

"480 Minutes" - 120120 Edition

What happens when you do 480 on 120120?  I guess we're going to find out!

So what happens when the RIAA and MPAA cry?  Congress proposes terrible legislation (SOPA and PIPA) to mollify them.  Fortunately there was a huge enough public outcry so that those bills are now at least on hold, but don't for a moment think they are not coming back.

And today the US government showed us that it doesn't even need SOPA and PIPA to do the bidding of the entertainment industry, it seized the domain of Megaupload and arrested it's CEO (who happens to be Alicia Keys' husband) and others (including Alicia Keys' husband).  It's doubtful that the domain seizure and arrests are even above board legal as those arrested are not US citizens, were arrested outside of the US, and the company itself is based outside of the US.  The rule of law is clearly now nothing more than a quaint notion.

Fortunately, we have people like Anonymous giving the finger to those attempting to trample on the Bill of Rights.

That said, while the internet still works, we've got music to play for you, so...hello and welcome 480 Minutes, the weekly marathon live hosted radio show highlighting the newest BAGeL Radio playlist additions, of which there are many today.

This week we will debuting new music by The Asteroids Galaxy Tour (Copenhagen, Denmark), Ben Kweller (Greenville, TX), Big Deal (London, England), The Big Pink (London, England), Capsula (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Cardinal (?), Cate Le Bon (Cardiff, Wales), Howler (Minneapolis, MN), John K Samson (Winnipeg, Canada), Justin Robinson & The Mary Annettes (Durham, NC), Nancy Magarill (New York, NY), The Paper Scissors (Sydney, Australia), Queens Of The Stone Age (Palm Desert, CA), and Rival Sons (Los Angeles, CA).

As always the show is hosted live and in-person from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific Time.  Please get in touch during those hours with your requests, comments, and favorite Gingrich excuse for cheating on his wives.

"480 Minutes" - A Friday The 13th in 2012...Scary!

Well, not actually scary.  Regardless of what TV tells us, the Mayans did not in fact predict that the world would end in 2012 -- 2012 just happened to be when their very forward-thinking calendar ended.  For a cleverly presented explanation of this, check out this video at Grey's Blog.  What's actually scary is how many stupid fucking Americans ignore reason and believe that The End Is Nigh anyway.  Not to mention the Missourians who would be less out of place in the Dark Ages when religion insisted that the world was flat, the sun revolved around the earth, and other such counterproductive drivel.

Now that that's out of the way...

Hello and welcome 480 Minutes, BAGeL Radio's award winning weekly live hosted radio show. Each Friday we highlight the newest playlist additions.  Some of the new releases are dated 2012, and some arrived late in 2011 during our "All Beatles All The Time" annual palette cleanse, hence the delay in getting them on the air.

This week we will debuting new music by Black Box Revelation (Dilbeek, Belgium), Ceremony (Rohnert Park, CA), Katrin the Thrill (Athens, Greece), Peggy Sue (Brighton, England), San Cisco (Freemantle, Australia), The Shins (Portland, OR), and Sleigh Bells (Brooklyn, NY).

As always the show is hosted live and in-person from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific Time.  Please get in touch during those hours with your requests, comments, and favorite kind of microwave popcorn:

"480 Minutes" - So This Is The New Year...

...and I don't feel any different.  Or so sang Death Cab For Cutie back in 2003.

Hello and welcome to the first 480 Minutes show of 2012.  The show is back and bigger than ever thanks to our two new distribution channels, SomaFM (super awesome sounding) and LoudCaster (almost indestructible, great for mobile or when on slow wi-fi).  For those still using the Live365 stream, please note that in the coming weeks our  relationship with Live365 will end and that stream will go away.

This week we will debuting new music by Guided By Voices (Dayton, OH), Nada Surf (New York), Run Dan Run (Charleston, SC),  and Zoos Of Berlin (Detroit, MI), and as always the show is hosted live and in-person from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific Time.  Please get in touch during those hours with your requests, comments, and low-carb recipes:

"480 Minutes" - Farewell, 2011

Hello and welcome to the final 480 Minutes show of 2011.  It's been another amazing year of amazing new music.  Next time you hear some talking head talks about the decline of the music business tell him you are paying attention to the man behind the curtain and said man is full of shit.  Maybe the giant labels are seeing sales decline, but great music is still being made and these days it is actually making it out of the garage and onto people's smartphones!

For proof, give a listen to some of the top 50 songs and top 50 albums of 2011 -- there is much more fantastic music being made and distributed than most people have a clue about.

This week we focus in on [we haven't decided yet! suggestions welcome!], and as always the show is hosted live and in-person from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

"480 Minutes" - Best Bay Area Music of 2011

Last Friday we unveiled our top 50 songs and top 50 albums of 2011 during the year-end best-of edition of 480 Minutes.  Some were shocked, some were appalled, most were pretty OK with the outcome.

This week we focus in on the top songs and releases by San Francisco Bay Area artist in 2011.  Starting at 11 a.m. (Pacific Time) we will count down the top 10 Bay Area songs of 2011.  Another 20 or so great Bay Area songs from 2011 will be sprinkled throughout the rest of the program which, as always, runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

Also, since it's the end of the year and we are not playing any new releases until 2012, a larger portion than usual of 480 Minutes this week and next will be dedicated to BAGeL Radio classics.  Mmmm, classics.  Marissa already got her requests in...where are yours?

Locals should tune in so they know which local acts they need to get out and see and support in 2012.  Non-locals should tune in to hear why the Bay Area is such an amazing place for music these days.  Those unsure if they are locals or non-locals should ask Santa for a map.
