11th BAGeL Radio Bday Party Next Week!

Next week marks 11 years since BAGeL Radio began streaming music for the masses (although the masses didn't really catch on until later that year!), and each year we celebrate The Birth of a Station with a rock show at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco.

Just because we've relocated 2,917 miles away does not mean we are going to end this wonderful tradition.

On the contrary, we continue on strong with the help of SomaFM by hosting a show at our beloved Bottom of the Hill on Friday, January 31st, 2014, featuring our long-time SF faves Birdmonster, a band from Portland we've featured on BAGeL Radio called The Lower 48, and new SF-faves City Light, whose records we've been playing since their 2010 album Burned Out Bright.

Please tune in to 480 Minutes tomorrow (Fridays 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Eastern Time) for a chance to win a pair of tickets, or buy advance tickets to help the bands put food on their families.  Feel free to share the link to the event page and to RSVP on Facebook and do415.

Also, you can listen to the bands via this handy-dandy YouTube playlist.

Hope to see you next week in San Francisco!

"480 Minutes" - new Surfer Blood

Tune in today for your chance to win tickets for the upcoming Lumerians/Wax Idols show at The Chapel tomorrow (Saturday, June 8th).  When you hear a song by either band during today's edition of 480 Minutes (9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Pacific Time), get in touch (contact info below).  It promises to be a great gig, so buy advance tickets here and, if you win, make a group event out of it and bring friends with your already purchased tickets!

Just for the record, last night I fill-in Djed a funk/soul/R&B set at Bottom of the Hill spinning music by the likes of Lulu, Funkadelic, B.T. Express, Spanky Wilson, The Bar-Kays, and a couple of dozen other artists.  By most accounts it did not suck.

Today's edition of 480 Minutes will see the debut of new songs by CSS (São Paulo, Brazil), Eleanor Friedberger (Brooklyn, NY), Feathers (Austin, TX), Grey Gordon (Fort Wayne, IN), The Mantles (San Francisco, CA),  Mixhell (São Paulo, Brazil),  The Multiple Cat (Davenport, IA), Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds (Washington, D.C.), Rogue Wave (Oakland, CA), Sonny and the Sunsets (San Francisco, CA), Surfer Blood (West Palm Beach, FL), and What Model Citizens (Brooklyn, NY).

Requests are taken during the live-hosted hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m Pacific Time) via e-mail and IM:

"480 Minutes" - new Veils, Strokes, BRMC, Depeche Mode, Suede, Wavve, etc.

This week I was fortunate enough to see three terrific bands in one night: Golden Grrrls, from Glasgow, Scotland, Brilliant Colors from San Francisco, CA, and Veronica Falls from London.  All were good, but Veronica Falls stole the show.  You can find some photos of the blessed event here:

Sadly I didn't take any photos at the Wavves, FIDLAR, and Cheatahs show last Friday night, but Wavves and FIDLAR absolutely killed it, with Wavves busting out a terrific cover of Sonic Youth's, "100%" (see video of SY performing the song below).

Today's 8-hour marathon radio show will feature new music by three bands with the word "black" in their name....that's notable, is it not?  Bands include The Aerotrope Guild (Sydney, Australia), Audacity (Fullerton, CA), Automatic Children (New York, NY), The Black Angels (Austin, TX), Black Rebel Motorcyle Club (San Francisco, CA), blackoutbeach (Vancouver, Canada), Campfires (Portland, OR), Cold Cave (NYC/LA sounding like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club covering Sisters of Mercy), Depeche Mode (Basildon, England), Keaton Henson (London, England), Restless Leg (Sydney, Australia),  Sam Vicari (Chicago, IL), Says She's Ms. Blat (New York, NY), Shout Out Louds (Stockholm, Sweden), The Strokes (New York, NY), Suede (London, England), Tango In The Attic (Glenrothes, Scotland), Vampire Blow (Copenhagen, Denmark, and they have adorable videos, one of which is below), The Veils (London, England), Waaves (San Diego, CA), and Z*L (Boston, MA).

"480 Minutes" - Australia x 5

Two contests to tell you about: first, we have tickets to give away for Monday's show at The Independent featuring Sea WolfHey Marseilles, and The Donnies the Amys. The legendary DJ Elise from Indie Pop Rocks (the internet radio station that inspired BAGeL Radio) will be spinning between the sets.  Buy tickets here (and then bring friends if you win!).  So, when you hear and Earlimart song during today's 480 Minutes show (Fridays, 9a.m. - 5p.m. Pacific Time), get in touch.  Please note that the gig is 21+ so you must be 21+ to win tickets.

The other contest is for all of you DJs and remixer-types out there.  SF/BKLN band Wildlife Control are running a contest allowing folks to remix their song "Analog Or Digital" (see the excellent video below) and the best one will win some amazing prizes: a year of SoundCloud Pro, a Maschine Mikro, and Komplete 8.  Yes, this is serious!

Speaking of serious, if you are a California voter overwhelmed by the propositions on next Tuesday's ballot, don't fret.  There are a couple of thorough voter guides that you can read online and/or print to take with you.  One is provided by KQED, the other by the SF Bay Guardian.  Both are worth reading -- they explain what the propositions do, who is backing them, and highlight the pros and cons.

Because I've gotten a few more "Help! Where'd BAGeL Radio go?!" e-mails this week, let me reiterate that **Loudcaster has closed***  Their instance of the BAGeL Radio stream is no longer accessible.  If you were listening to BAGeL Radio via TuneIn you may not have even been aware that it was their stream you were listening to.  The good news is, rectifying the situation is easy -- just search for 480 Minutes on TuneIn, or your Sonos desktop controller, or whathaveyou -- that stream will work.  If you need help repointing any device to the SomaFM stream of BAGeL Radio, please go to http://bagelradio.com/radio/listen.html for instructions/links, or use the contact information below to get in touch and we'll be happy to help.

Today on 480 Minutes we will debut new songs by Abbe May (Perth, Australia), The Barbaras (Memphis, TN), Black Moth Super Rainbow (Pittsburgh, PA), The Blackwater Fever (Brisbane, Australia), The Coup (Oakland, CA), Earlimart (Los Angeles, CA), Grape Soda (Athens, GA), GRMLN (Santa Cruz, CA), The Hoot Hoots (Seattle, WA), Sea Wolf (Los Angeles, CA), A Shoreline Dream (Denver, CO), Sic Alps (San Francisco, CA), Skipping Girl Vinegar (Melbourne, Australia), Talk Normal (Brooklyn, NY), Tamaryn (San Francisco, CA), Titus Andronicus (Glen Rock, New Jersey), Tracksuit (Perth, Australia), The Trashed Romeos (Memphis, TN), and Voltaire Twins (Perth, Australia).  That's five Australian acts today.  Strewth!

"480 Minutes" - new Turbo Fruits, Menomena, Grizzly Bear

Today is a ticket giveaway edition of 480 Minutes -- we've got tickets to not one but two Bay Area shows tonight.  Exciting stuff!  In San Francisco there's the SomaFM Presents... Earlimart @ The Independent show.  In Oakland, there's Mister Loveless at The Uptown show. When you hear songs by either band, get in touch and you might just win yourself a pair of tickets!

I am ready for another live show after seeing Eternal Summers @ Bottom of the Hill this week.  They were really, really good, and it's a shame that more people weren't there to soak in their Lush meets Three Imaginary Boys-era Cure via Stangeways, The Wedding Present, and early 80s Banshees sound.

Today on 480 Minutes we will debut new songs by Atoms For Peace (Radiohead), Cars & Trains (Portland, OR), The Denzels (Brooklyn, NY), Earlimart (Los Angeles, CA), Freedom Fry (Los Angeles, CA, Paris, France),  Grizzly Bear (Brooklyn, NY), Menomena (Portland, OR), Murder By Death (Bloomington, IN), Stars (Montreál, Canada), Turbo Fruits (Nashville, TN), The Union Electric (St. Louis, MO), and The xx (London, England).

Please contact us on Fridays (during 480 Minutes) from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific Time (time zone adjuster):

Our Show! Tonight! Bottom Of The Hill!

Our BAGeL Radio Presents... show, kindly previewed by David Downs in the SF Examiner:

DJ Ted boosts Bottom of the Hill
DJ Ted of BAGeL Radio is known for the eclectic
lineup in his weekly broadcast “480 Minutes.”

DJ Ted of BAGeL Radio brings his award-winning curatorial skills to the Bottom of the Hill Thursday in a show supporting a trio of rising indie pop and punk acts.
The winner of two CMJ Awards and several others, DJ Ted’s 9-year-old Internet radio station BAGeL Radio has become a key booster for San Francisco’s indie rock scene.
His show “480 Minutes,” broadcast live from his San Francisco apartment on Fridays, is inundated with promotional CDs from hundreds of labels like Sub Pop, Absolutely Kosher and Asthmatic Kitty — all vying for a spot in his eclectic weekly lineups.
As one of The City’s top indie rock venues, Bottom of the Hill in Potrero Hill is a natural fit for Ted, who DJs at the club on a semi-regular basis.
“It’s a good place for me,” he says. “Since I first moved here in 1998, it’s always been my favorite joint. I walked in there the first time and it felt like it was run by family. They always have bands I want to see and help support and get people out for.”
The lineup features King Tuff, The Coathangers and Jaill, with DJ Ted running the transitions. Ted uses the same setup for his radio show as he does for DJ sets — headphones and a laptop packed with tracks. He uses audio software MegaSeg for both, as well.
If there were professors of indie rock at San Francisco State University, where Ted has taught, he would be a department chair; his passion for tonight’s acts is apparent: He says, “They are all bands that I love, bands that I play and gets lots of airtime.”
Edgy, all-female punk act The Coathangers are commercial radio-ready with their third and latest album, which he calls “new wavey with a punk rock background — a mix of aggression, hooks and quirk” and “just absolutely great.”
He describes King Tuff as “Ty Segall and Jay Reatard if they were more interested in pop songs. It’s hook after hook after hook and a nasty nasally voice. There’s total attitude in the lyrics.”
BAGeL Radio recently moved hosts from Live365.com to local, award-winning net radio station SomaFM, DJ Ted announces, adding, “I’ve been a fan for years. It’s an honor to come aboard.”

DJ Ted of BAGeL Radio: Opening for King Tuff, Jaill, The Coathangers
Where: Bottom of the Hill, 1233 17th St., S.F.
When: 9 p.m. Thursday July 26
Tickets: $12

"480 Minutes" - Win Gig Tickets! Oh, and new Afghan Whigs

Hello and welcome to an addition of 480 Minutes that will blow out of the water every other edition of 480 Minutes...like...ever.  Why, you ask?  Because we will be employing a new audio input interface, and I have been assured that this new device will make my on-air voice sexier than ever.  Like Barry White sexy.  Make sure there's a pillow nearby on which to land when you faint.  You have been warned.

In other news, we have tickets to give away for this Thursday's BAGeL Radio Presents... gig featuring live performances by King TuffJaillThe Coathangers at Bottom of the Hill (buy tickets).  Please come out and support these 3 excellent touring bands (from LA, Milwaukee, and Atlanta, respectively).    It's an all-ages show, so have your big sibling or cool parent escort you!  Stay tuned and when you hear a song by any of the featured artists, get in touch and you might just win yourself a pair of tickets to the show.  I'll be there playing the songs between bands, so please stop by the sound/DJ booth and say hi.

Today on 480 Minutes we will debut new songs by The Afghan Whigs (Cincinnati, OH), AM (London, England), Birdmonster (San Francisco, CA), Chapel Club (London, England), DIIV (New York, NY), Eternal Summers (Roanoke, VA), A Great Big Pile Of Leaves (Brookyln, NY), Lawrence Arabia (Auckland, New Zealand), Micachu and The Shapes (Surrey, England), New God (Maryland), Opossom (Auckland, New Zealand), Royal Headache (Sydney, Australia), Samara Lubelski (Portland, OR), Shadowbox (Brooklyn, NY), The Very Best (London and Malawi),  Westkust (Gothenburg, Sweden), and Wet Hair (Cardiff, Wales, England).

In honor of the four (!) bands from the lands down under who will be making their BAGeL Radio debuts today, a helpful chart for understanding their accents:

The 480 Minutes program is live-hosted and your feedback between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time (time zone adjuster) is greatly appreciated:

"480 Minutes" - The 420 Edition

Today we have tickets to give away for Loquat's CD release show next Friday (4/27) at The Independent.  Also are on the bill are Mister Loveless and Excuses For Skipping, and all three are Bay Area bands we recommend checking out.  Get in touch when you hear a Loquat song between 9a.m. and 5p.m. and you might just win yourself a pair of tickets to their show!

This week we again had a virtual ton of new releases submitted, and (un)fortunately most of these sucked.  On the boo! side, well, much time was wasted listening to crap.  On the yay! side, it didn't take nearly as long as usual to review them all.  The ones that made the cut and will get their BAGeL Radio debut today include music by Allo Darlin' (London, England), Bear In Heaven (Brooklyn, NY), Dry The River (London, England), Emma Louise (Brisbane, Australia), Fort Lean (Brooklyn, NY), Here We Go Magic (Brooklyn, NY), Imaginary Cities (Winnipeg, Canada),  Jake Bugg (Nottingham, England),  Orcas (Seattle, WA), Theme Park (London, England), and White Woods (Atlanta, GA).

Yes, 11 new playlist additions...even though most of the submissions this week were weak.

In honor of this auspicious date, today's show will also feature a song or two about Mary Jane.

As always, the show runs from 9a.m. until 5p.m. Pacific Time.  Get in touch in real time during the show:
