DJ Ted of BAGeL Radio brings his award-winning curatorial skills to the Bottom of the Hill Thursday in a show supporting a trio of rising indie pop and punk acts.
The winner of two CMJ Awards and several others, DJ Ted’s 9-year-old Internet radio station BAGeL Radio has become a key booster for San Francisco’s indie rock scene.
His show “480 Minutes,” broadcast live from his San Francisco apartment on Fridays, is inundated with promotional CDs from hundreds of labels like Sub Pop, Absolutely Kosher and Asthmatic Kitty — all vying for a spot in his eclectic weekly lineups.
As one of The City’s top indie rock venues, Bottom of the Hill in Potrero Hill is a natural fit for Ted, who DJs at the club on a semi-regular basis.
“It’s a good place for me,” he says. “Since I first moved here in 1998, it’s always been my favorite joint. I walked in there the first time and it felt like it was run by family. They always have bands I want to see and help support and get people out for.”
The lineup features King Tuff, The Coathangers and Jaill, with DJ Ted running the transitions. Ted uses the same setup for his radio show as he does for DJ sets — headphones and a laptop packed with tracks. He uses audio software MegaSeg for both, as well.
If there were professors of indie rock at San Francisco State University, where Ted has taught, he would be a department chair; his passion for tonight’s acts is apparent: He says, “They are all bands that I love, bands that I play and gets lots of airtime.”
Edgy, all-female punk act The Coathangers are commercial radio-ready with their third and latest album, which he calls “new wavey with a punk rock background — a mix of aggression, hooks and quirk” and “just absolutely great.”
He describes King Tuff as “Ty Segall and Jay Reatard if they were more interested in pop songs. It’s hook after hook after hook and a nasty nasally voice. There’s total attitude in the lyrics.”
BAGeL Radio recently moved hosts from Live365.com to local, award-winning net radio station SomaFM, DJ Ted announces, adding, “I’ve been a fan for years. It’s an honor to come aboard.”
