"480 Minutes" - Death From Above 2014
It was a rough week here in the U.S. The chicken hawks (and actual hawks) who lied us into Iraq in the first place (and the mainstream media which amplified their deceit while failing to ask necessary questions) returned, loudly and frequently appearing on the old boob tube to scare the shit out of the American public with it's new boogeyman, all but forcing President Obama to begin the mission creep that is now pretty much required of him by the stupidity of his countrymen. It was also rough seeing the 9/11 images all over again: the death, the destruction, the violation…and reminders of the lies and the cover ups and the posturing and the Giuliani and of course everything that terrible event scared us into allowing to happen (illegal war of aggression, torture, kidnapping, unprecedented mass surveillance, the slow and steady erosion of the Bill of Rights, the militarization of the police, etc.)…and then, on top of all that, we got a metric ton of lame releases we had to listen to so you don't have to. (My unfortunate turn of phrase just reminded me of the bullshit scare tactic, "we're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them at home." What a load of manure that was…and is again!). Fortunately, there were a few good releases as well.
Today 480 Minutes will feature new music by Archie Powell & The Exports (Chicago, IL, @ExportHQ), Death From Above 1979 (Toronto, Canada, @DFA1979), GRMLN (San Francisco, CA, @GRMLNband), The Growlers (Costa Mesa, CA, @theGROWLERS), The Jane Shermans (Nashville, TN, @TheJaneShermans), Karen O (New York, NY, @KarenO), Soft Shadows (Portland, OR, @Soft_Shadows), The Twilight Sad (Kilsyth, Scotland, @TheTwilightSad), and We Were Promised Jetpacks (Edinburgh, Scotland, @wwpj).

"480 Minutes" - Summer Is Here
After reviewing of all of the music submitted this week, of which there was 50% less than usual, and out of which were so few winners, I was shocked at the low number of songs that passed muster. Shocked! Then a startling revelation hot me: summer is actually here! Historically, business-savvy artists, management, and labels don't release music during summer! They release summer albums before summer! They release non-summer albums in September hoping to capture some of the back-to-school dollars which are supposed to be for books and nutritious meals but so often end up spent on music, booze, drugs, gigs, dates, and whatever is left over is spent on boxed macaroni and cheese (not the hipster kind with lobster and truffles). They also release tons of stuff in October and November in hopes of gaining traction for the holiday gift-buying season.
Summer is for going on vacation and listening to stuff from summers past that reminds of the summer fun, summer love, summer heartbreak, summer adventures, and lazy summer days of doing nothing but enjoying the fact that there's nothing to do! Not new releases.
That said, there were a few worthy submissions (one of which was released in the UK in 2013) from which today we will debut new songs: The Acid (@TheAcid), Alt-J (Leeds, England, @alt_J), Dirty Lungs (Birmingham, AL, @TheDirtyLungs), Drenge (Sheffield, England, @drenge), JPNSGRLS (Vancouver, Canada, @jpnsgrls), and Liam Bailey (Nottingham, England, @LiamBailey).

"480 Minutes" - new Bob Mould, Orwells, Parquet Courts
I wrote a whole long piece about how embarrassingly the Republicans are handling Bowe-gazi and how embarrassingly the Democrats are handling the Snowden situation, but I'm going to post that stuff somewhere else. That said, don't be surprised if both subjects (plus "open carry") come up during the show today...I might not be able to control myself.
Today we will debut new songs by Bob Mould (San Francisco, CA via Minneapolis, MN, @BobMouldMusic), Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (Philadelphia, PA, @CYHSYband), The Donkeys (San Diego, CA, @TheDonkeys), The Fresh & Onlys (San Francisco, CA, @FreshAndOnlys), Guy Blakeslee (The Entrance Band, @GuyBlakeslee), Pete Molinari (London, England, @PeteMolinari), Teleman (London via Reading, England, @TelemanMusic), and Tijuana Panthers (Long Beach, CA, @TijuanaPanthers), plus more new songs from The Orwells (Chicago, IL, @TheOrwells), and Parquet Courts (Brooklyn, NY via Denton, TX).
(@Twitter handles included so that when you hear something new that you like you can follow their artist feed…in case that wasn't obvious).

"480 Minutes" - Maximo Park in NYC Tonight!
Tonight's NYC gig is Maximo Park at Irving Plaza. We've seen them at venues small and large (including in 2005 when they opened for The Bravery) and no matter where they play they always sound great. We are also excited to see Karla Moheno again tomorrow night, Saturday May 24th, at 7:30 at Cameo Gallery in Williamsburg. She was most impressive when we saw her a few weeks back.
Thanks to all of you who tuned in for this week's Fuzzy Road radio show on Tuesday at 3. While I've enjoyed hosting it for the past 4-5 months, I do feel like the show has a step forward in the past couple of weeks and been even more fun. Maybe it's just me, but I suggest you tune in to Fuzzy Road Episode #7 on Tuesday, May 27th at 3pm Eastern U.S. Time, to check out BAGeL Radio's new 90-minute psych/garage/space rock weekly hosted program.

480 Minutes - new Horrors!
As long-time BAGeL Radio listeners know, we've been big fans of The Horrors since their earliest releases, back when the music press regularly trashed them for their look and for their garage-rock sound. Then the band reinvented itself musically for Primary Colours (our #1 album of 2009), yet many critics seemingly could not shake their initial negative feelings about the band. Finally on third album Skying critics started coming around to what a brilliant band this is (although we still prefer Primary Colours, Skying is most excellent). Well, now The Horrors are back with Luminous, and after a few listens we are pleased to announce in no uncertain terms that they are once again in fine form. We will be playing several songs from Luminous today -- critics be damned!
Please tune in for today's brand new episode of the award-winning, live-hosted 480 Minutes program (Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Eastern U.S.Time): http://somafm.com/bagel/
Today we will debut new songs by Band of Skulls (Southampton, England, @BandOfSkulls), Chain & The Gang (Washington, D.C., @ChainAndTheGang), Damon Albarn (Blur, Leytonstone, England, @DamonAlbarn), The Doors (well, covers of Doors songs by current psych rock acts, anyway, @TheDoors), Fear of Men (Brighton, England, @FearOfMen), FM Belfast (ReykjavÃk, Iceland, @FMBelfast), Jack White (Detroit, MI, @thirdmanrecords), Mystic Braves (Los Angeles, CA, @MysticBraves), Papercuts (San Francisco, CA, @Papercuts_Music), Sam Page (Orange County, CA, @SamPageMusic), Thee Oh Sees (San Francisco, CA, @TheeOhSees), Trick Mammoth (Dunedin, New Zealand, @TrickMammoth), The Vickers (Florence, Italy, @The_Vickers), and Wheelies (Tacoma, WA, @SwoonRecords). Oh, yeah, and some band called The Horrors (London, England, @Horrors_Official).

"480 Minutes" - Still Not Spring
Last Friday at Mercury Lounge The Coathangers were, unsurprisingly, great. Check out an official Coathangers video at the bottom of this post, and here's BAGeL Radio Music Director Ted with Julia (aka Crook Kid) Coathanger moments after their set ended:
Since then we've flirted with Spring a couple of times here in NYC, but our projected high temperature in the coming week is 64 degrees, so even though the trees have started blooming and the Yankees have already won 5 of 7 games against the Red Sox, it still doesn't quite feel like Spring, you know?

"480 Minutes" - Coathangers Tonight @ Mercury Lounge!
I am very excited to see The Coathangers tonight at The Mercury Lounge in NYC. I have been fortunate enough to see the band several times (mostly as a quartet, most recently as a trio). Tonight will be different from all of those other nights because I'll be accompanied by my best friend since childhood who also happens to love The Coathangers, and they are playing within walking distance of his apartment, and it's his birthday! How cool is that?!
In honor of this blessed event we will play a 'hangers song. Or four.
We will also be playing the recordings that we did of Bay Area bands Birdmonster and Mister Loveless at the SomaFM studio -- these recordings are available as a very limited edition 7" single (yes, vinyl!) -- our gift to you for a donation of $35 or more. Just in time for Record Store Day!
Today we will debut new songs by The Black Angels (Austin, TX, @TheBlackAngels) Call To Mind (Glasgow, Scotland, @CallToMind), Chad VanGaalen (Calgary, Canada, @ChadVanGaalen), DWNTWN (Los Angeles, CA, @dwntwnmusic), Eels (Los Angeles, CA), The Faint (Omaha, NE, @TheFaint), Howler (Minneapolis, MN, @howler_band), Malachai (Bristol, England, @GeeMalachai), Only Real (London, England, @OnlyRealReal), The Spits (Seattle, WA), Villagers (Dublin, Ireland, @WeAreVillagers), and a couple of songs from the Finland Music/Line Of Best Fit Record Store Day release.

"480 Minutes" - new Maximo Park
A busy week here this week meant not a lot of sleep but that's OK, 480 Minutes host Ted Leibowitz is usually only about half-awake behind the mic, anyway. During the live hosted hours free to give him a hard time about the mistakes, mispronunciations, and long pauses caused by his tired brain attempting to retrieve information through a sleep-deprived haze.
Through that haze it was extremely disappointing to note the almost unfathomable fact that the new Pixies "album," which is not much more than a compilation of the 3 EPs the band has released since the departure of Kim Deal, offered up no new songs worthy of air play. How sad is that? Swing and a miss, not a hit to be had, from one of our all-time favorite bands, no less. Perhaps after we sleep all weekend the haze will lift and we will discover hidden gem. (don't hold your breath...about the gem, or about us catching up on sleep this weekend!).
Today we will debut new songs by The Afghan Whigs (Cincinnati, OH, @TheAfghanWhigs), Beaty Heart (London, England, @BeatyHeart), Chuck E. Weiss (Los Angeles, CA), Fujiya & Miyagi (Brighton, England), Jef Barbara (Montreál, Canada), Jessica Lea Mayfield (Kent, OH, @JessicaMayfield), Maximo Park (Newcastle, England, @MaximoPark), Overlake (Jersey City, NJ, @OverlakeMusic), Protomartyr (Detroit, MI), SWF (Brooklyn, NY, @StevieWF), and Tweens (Cincinnati, OH, @tweensband).

"480 Minutes" - Music. Yay.
Did you notice that the same week the Supreme Corp decided that eviscerating campaign finance laws was a good idea, a Senator from Kansas stood up in the Senate and read for the record an Op-Ed written by his corporate sponsor, Charles Koch, published that very day in the Gall Street Journal? It was either a clueless faux pas by a stooge who doesn't even realize that he's a puppet, or an open admission that "I am here to do the bidding of my master, Charles Koch." I'm inclined to believe that it was a bit of both based on the fact that Koch Industries sent an e-mail to their employees to share the piece with those who would benefit from "hearing the truth." I bet it's useful to have a Senator (or 20) as an employee.
In other news: music. Yay!
Today we will debut new songs by Ausmuteants (Geelong, Australia), Denney and The Jets (Nashville, TN, @DenneyNTheJets), Drive-By Truckers (Athens, GA, @DriveByTruckers), King of Prussia (Athens, GA), Odonis Odonis (Toronto, Canada, @OdonisOdonis), Relations (Brooklyn, NY, @RelationsBand), School of Language (Sunderland, England, @SchoolOfLanguag), and September Girls (Dublin, Ireland, @September_Girls).

"480 Minutes" - Music Snobbery
I'm still a bit under the weather and crabby so I will start this off with a music snob rant:
[start rant]
I find it more disappointing when a venue plays good music on shuffle than when they just play crap music. In the latter scenario at least you know you never stood a chance of enjoying the tunes. In the former it's like getting a less than great meal despite starting with great ingredients. The aggravating inspiration for this rant happened at dinner at The Mighty Quinn in Manhattan on Tuesday night, where we were treated to train wreck of The Velvet Underground "Sunday Morning" into The Cure "Why Can't I Be You?" into the Pixies "Hey." In this instance the downtempo and quiet-starting "Hey" would have fit well immediately following the relatively slow and quiet "Sunday Morning." With the blaring horns and upbeat tempo of "Why Can't I Be You?" in the middle, it was apparent that the playlist was created by DJ iPod (aka shuffle), which will invariably make a mess of all but the most homogenous music libraries. With all of the music services available today (not to mention us good old human music curator types still walking, breathing, and play-listing) there's no excuse for such laziness.
[end of rant]
On the flip side we got to see a terrific show at The Bowery Ballroom later that night featuring Blouse from Portland, OR -- live they reminded me of Boys Don't Cry/Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me Cure (skipping all records in between) fronted a an icy, hazy Slumberland Records-sounding female lead vocal -- and the increasingly amazing Dum Dum Girls, who make me smile even when they pillage shamelessly from Tommy James &The Shondells (check out videos 2 & 3 below to hear what I mean):
Today we will debut new songs by The Afghan Whigs (Cincinnati, OH, @TheAfghanWhigs), Cloud Nothings (Cleveland, OH, @cloud_nothings), Cola Koala (Russia), Colourmusic (Stillwater, OK, @colourmusic), Mac DeMarco (Edmondton, Canada, @MlsDeMarco), Tune-Yards (Oakland, CA, @TuneYards), Tycho (San Francisco, CA, @ISO50), White Hinterland (Scituate, MA, @WhiteHinterland), and Withered Hand (Edinburgh, Scotland, @WitheredHand).

"480 Minutes" - new Liars
This week was all about not sleeping for some unknown reason (potentially allergies). By Wednesday the lack of sleep made everything one...long...(yawn)...drag. It's hard to like new music when you feel like crud and just want to sleep, but somehow a few new records managed to slip past the snapping fangs of Misery, the crabby and exhausted guard dog, and will make their BAGeL Radio debuts today including songs by Big Scary (Melbourne, Australia, @BigScaryMusic), Burnt Ones (San Francisco, CA) Dana Falconberry (Austin, TX, @DanaFalconberry), Faces On Film (Boston, MA, @FacesOnFilm), Honeymilk (Stockholm, Sweden), Kevin Drew (Toronto, Canada, @KevinSelection), Liars (LA/NYC, @LiarsOfficial), Metronomy (London, England, @Metronomy), PINS (Manchester, England, @WeArePINS), Throwing Snow (London, England, @ThrowingSnow), and Walking Shapes (New York, NY, @WalkingShapes).

"480 Minutes" - new Coathangers, Orwells, Perfect Pussy
That NYC network weatherman (Lonnie) who told us over a week ago that we won't see temperatures "like these" (in the 20s) again until next Christmas is once again wrong. It was in the 20s in NYC last week after he gave that assurance, and it was in the 20s again yesterday. I'm starting to think he's not actually an accredited meteorologist, but then again, I've lived in a place without weather for the past 15 years, so maybe I should cut him some slack.
Meanwhile on Tuesday evening I was walking down Broadway and noted that it was 60 degrees at 10p.m. Coupla days ago. Unreal.
Today's brand new episode of the award-winning, live-hosted 480 Minutes program (Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Eastern U.S.Time) will debut some pretty pop, raucous noise, and a mess of weird shit including songs by The Can't Tells (Brooklyn, NY, @TheCantTells), The Coathangers (Atlanta, GA, @TheCoathangers), Dry Heeves (Lubbock, TX, @LeDryHeeves), Jesus Sons (San Francisco/Los Angeles, CA, @JesusSonsBand), Little Children (Stockholm, Sweden, @Children_Little), The Orwells (Chicago, IL, @TheOrwells), Perfect Pussy (Syracuse, NY), Roman Remains (London, England, @Roman_Remains), Secret Colours (Chicago, IL, @SecretColours), Traumahelikopter (Groningen, The Netherlands, @trmhlkptr), and Trin Tran (Madison, WI).

"480 Minutes" - new Neneh Cherry...yes, Neneh Cherry. Also, 28 Minutes Worth of New Elbow
Earlier this week a NYC network weatherman (who shall remain nameless) told us we won't see temperatures "like these" (in the 20s) again until next Christmas. When temperatures were in the low 20s today that boy showed no remorse, did not own up to his mistaken bold statement, and lost my respect forever and ever. Not that I ever had much respect for weathermen, other than the incomparable Al Kaprielian, of course.
Today's brand new episode of our live-hosted 480 Minutes program (Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Eastern U.S.Time) will debut songs by The Black Lips (Atlanta, GA, @TheBlackLips), Damaged Bug (SF/LA, CA, @TheeOhSees), Elbow (Manchester, England, @Elbow), Heartsrevolution (New York, NY, @hrtsrevolution), Krebs (Glenolden, PA), Menace Beach (Leeds, England, @MENACE_BEACH), Neneh Cherry (London, England, @MissCherryLala), Phantogram (Saratoga Springs, NY, @Phantogram), and Twin Peaks (Chicago, IL, @TwinPeaksDudes).

"480 Minutes" -
Earlier this week I was shown an e-mail which begged recipients to share it with 20 friends. It was all about how terrible Obamacare is by making alarming accusations about cutting off cancer care for patients over a certain age, absurdities like one must be admitted to a hospital by one's primary care physician or be forced to self-pay for treatment...wild stuff. Even a mention of ACORN, which was shuttered in 2010, didn't tip people off to the fact that this was a crock of shit being peddled by someone whose main agenda was to scare the shit out of senior citizens (while infusing in them an unfounded hatred of Obamacare). The damned thing wasn't even authored by the purported author, and some of the provisions about which it complains never made it into the resolution which became law.
Thankfully I didn't need to rebut the whole thing myself, it had already been done for me. Repeatedly. In 2009. I guess I shouldn't be shocked that people would try to scare seniors with exaggerations, falsehoods, and outright lies, and that FOX News viewers would buy the lies and ask for more, but I do find it shocking that 5 years after this exact e-mail had been thoroughly and repeatedly debunked, people are still sending it around as news. And the truth.
The greatest threat America faces is the ignorance of Americans.
Despite this I believed the internets when they just told me that it "feels like -3 degrees Fahrenheit" here in Queens, NY. It's bitter cold again.
Today's brand new episode of our live-hosted 480 Minutes program (Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Eastern U.S.Time) will debut songs by Angel Olsen (St. Louis, MO, @AngelOlsen), Caught A Ghost (Los Angeles, CA, @CaughtAGhost), Eagulls (Leeds, England, @EagullsUK), Karla Moheno (New York, NY, @KarlaMoheno), Mise En Scene (Winnipeg, Canada, @MiseEnSceneBand), Modern Baseball (Philadelphia, PA, @ModernBaseball), No Kill (Brooklyn, NY, @NoKillMusic), Real Estate (Brooklyn, NY, @RealEstateBand), The Silver Palms (Camden, GA, @TheSilverPalms), St. Vincent (Dallas, TX, @St_Vincent), Sultan Bathery (Vicenza, Italy, @SultanBathery), and Wild Beasts (London, England, @WildBeasts).
