This week I was fortunate enough to attend the 10th San Francisco Music Tech Summit and am happy to report that the tenor of the music/tech discussion appears to have changed. With each summit the speakers, panelists, and attendees seem less tied to the old music business model of selling shiny plastic discs (while ripping off the artists who created the art) while moving more towards a future of streaming media and subscription services.
Still, the RIAA continues doing hateful shit like pushing bad legislation, pressuring Google to stop doing what it does, maintaining misguided monopolistic middle-men like SoundExchange to ensure that most revenues get funneled to them and not to artists, and stomping on legitimate businesses they don't like...but the tide is clearly turning against them. It was the most encouraging music/tech conference I've been to yet -- as you've read here many times before, the music industry is fine and dandy, it's the paleolithic recorded music industry that's in trouble.

There is a good write-up of SF MusicTech X over on Hypebot.
Next week is the Digital Media Forum East conference...if I can find a cheap flight to NYC, I'll be there, too!
