"480 Minutes" - 15 Years Of BAGeL Radio!

On February 1, 2003, in a bedroom in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, following over two months of intense insomnia -- caused by the disbelief that the American people were going to let the clearly mendacious and hawkish neo-cons con us into an unnecessary war of aggression -- which freed me to up to digitize more of my music collection ad figure out a few technical things, BAGeL Radio was launched.  It was kind of a cool moment, but not in the way one might think looking back from all these years later: I was streaming music from my home to my office.  I no longer had to select, whittle down, and plunk a pile CDs into my bag and (more importantly) bike them back uphill on my way home from work every day.  Life was good!

I told a few friends, they told a few friends, people on the east coast and UK started listening, we got some nice press, won a few awards, and here we are, 15 years later, still debuting new indie rock noise pop every week (with a bit more of a focus on all of the great new psych rock and garage punk that's been coming out over the past 10-12 years) and classic alternative rock from the 70s and 80s.

We jumped from network to network and provider to provider, finally finding our forever home in 2001 at the SomaFM family of stations, and we've never looked back (thanks Rusty!).

To celebrate our 15th birthday/anniversary, today we will give away 15 SomaFM t-shirts and BAGeL sticker/magnet packs.  We will also feature sets of music highlighting some of the best songs of the past 15 years (not all years will be represented!), and sets highlighting several quintessential BAGeL Radio songs.

I tried to unearth some early Friday playlists, and was able to (mostly) reconstruct one from 2004 (with voiceovers!). That one may be one of our the reruns we'll air on Sunday 2/4.

On top of all that, we (shockingly!) also have new music today including songs by The Damned (London, England, @thedamnedtwits), Hookworms (Leeds, England, @hookworms), Hop Along (Philadelphia, PA, @hopalong), Mt. Wilson Repeater (Los Angeles, CA), Shannon and the Clams (Oakland, CA, @shanandtheclams), Soccer Mommy (Nashville, TN, @sopharela), and The Spook School (Glasgow, Scotland, @spookschool).

Today's show runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time and is followed by 2 hours of uninterrupted music.  The show will then be rebroadcast in it's entirety beginning at 7 p.m., then again on Saturday at 5 a.m. and 3 p.m., and one final time on Sunday at 1 a.m., followed by a rebroadcast of this week's Fuzzy Road radio show at 11 a.m.
