"480 Minutes" - Be Good To Each Other

At the risk of sounding like a goddamned dirty hippie, please be good to each other. Much stress and negativity is permeating the ether right now. Some of the causes have existed for decades, some of those have spiked of late, some are relatively new and/or taking new, more in-your-face forms, and we're all dealing with these stressors. Some deal better than others, some seemingly deal better than others, but we're all dealing, all in need of a little extra rope, a little extra kindness, or if you can spare it, a lot of extra rope and lot of extra kindness.

For people with critical thinking skills these are dark times. Please do what you can to make them a little less dark for those fellow critical thinkers you come into contact with.

Even a tiny little thing like pausing to hold a door for a stranger, who then says "thank you," will brighten both of your days. And if that stranger then holds the door for the next person, and that person gets an appreciative "thank you..."

STFU, I am not a goddamned dirty hippie. I cut my hair years ago.

Today's 480 Minutes show will feature new songs by Cosmonauts (Los Angeles, CA, @__cosmonauts__), Courtney Barnett (Melbourne, Australia, @CourtneyMelba), Fat White Family (London, England, @FatWhiteFamilyTW), Grace Ives (Queens, NY, @GraceIves), Guided By Voices (Dayton, OH, @_GuidedByVoices), Money For Rope (Melbourne, Australia, @MoneyForRope), The Mountain Goats (@Mountain_Goats), and Tacocat (Seattle, WA, @tacocats).

480 Minutes is live-hosted from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time and is followed by 2 hours of uninterrupted music.  The show is then rebroadcast in it's entirety beginning at 7 p.m., then again on Saturday at 5 a.m. and 3 p.m., and one final time on Sunday at 1 a.m., followed by a rebroadcast of this week's Fuzzy Road radio show at 11 a.m. and then a couple of old 480 Minutes episodes from this week in past years, so there will be hosted shows all weekend long.

Tune in! (somafm.com/bagel or, if you have an Alexa, the command "Alexa, play SomaFM BAGeL Radio" works like a charm). SomaFM channels are also available on many set top boxes and home audio systems.

"480 Minutes" - No Exoneration

What level of turd signs up to do dirty deeds for a monster which even lying racist toady human pin cushion Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III wouldn't stoop to? William Pelham Barr is that level of turd. The current U.S. Attorney General is off to a fine start in his attempt to wrest the top Tangerine Toddler Sycophant trophy from Lindsey Graham. This most disgusting display of party over country is brought to you by: the Republican Party, whose members apparently continue support the serial liar in chief.

Meanwhile there are individuals and organizations in the U.S. spending time and money to convince people to not vaccinate their children. We are experiencing a resurgence of measles, a disease declared eliminated in the U.S. 20 years ago, to such an extent that while in an overcrowded Emergency Room this week, everyone was handed masks "due to the measles epidemic." Apparently the disease elimination declaration people didn't count on charlatans making robocalls to push disinformation about the medical miracle that did away with such things as polio and for this scheme to work: enough of the population is putting their kids and others at risk for no good reason whatsoever that these pockets of selfish idiocy are making a difference and weakening our herd immunity.

In more pleasant news, my beloved New York Islanders have advanced to the second round of the NHL playoffs after sweeping a playoff series for the first time in 35 years. Their first-round games were all close, tense, and won by the team I've been rooting for (and suffering with) since as a kid my best friend's dad (a Rangers fan!) took me to my first ever hockey game which just happened to be on Long Island. If you like televised sports at all and have never watched playoff hockey, do yourself a favor and don't start now because it will consume you through June. Even games between teams you've never heard of will be riveting.

Today's 480 Minutes show will feature new songs by Broken Social Scene (Toronto, Canada, @bssmusic), Sink Tapes (New Brunswick, New Jersey, @sinktapes), TR/ST (Toronto, Canada, @tr_st), and Wand (Los Angeles, CA, @corythanson).

"480 Minutes" - The Purge

When the captain of a ship loses it and starts issuing dangerous, amoral orders, the officers have a choice: go along with what they know is wrong, resign, or refuse and be fired. This is what we are seeing with the national security leadership positions of the Cruelty Administration right now. These positions are, at present, vacant: Defense Secretary, Department of Homeland Security Secretary or Deputy Secretary, U.N. Ambassador, FEMA Director, Secret Service Director, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director...and some of those people resisting are hardly saints (Kirstjen Nielsen, Child Stealer comes easily to mind), so imagine how awful the latest orders must be.

I had a conversation about this leadership vacuum with a Cult 45 member. Let me begin by telling you that although I believe her to be sincere in her convictions and she appears to be well educated, she seems incapable of critical thought. Her take is that she's thrilled with the situation, suggesting that the high-level vacancies were saving the country money and, besides, obviously everything is running like a well-oiled machine so we don't need those positions filled. She was certain that whichever unaccountable highest-ranking lower-level person at each department was handling everything just fine. When asked for evidence that "everything is running like a well-oiled machine," she faltered. When I suggested that such leadership positions are often less about day-to-day hands-on management and more about forward-thinking planning and preparation for unforeseen future situations, she stopped responding.

Somehow this is not a major news story, and certainly not this angle about our entire national security apparatus is adrift, perhaps protecting us for now, but certainly not on the lookout for new threats or more effective means of doing what needs to be done. Instead the mainstream media remains obsessed with a college admissions scandal which shocked no one, the IMF paying Ecuador $4.2B to hand over Julian Assange (which is kinda shocking, I must say), and of course the Mueller report which no one has seen except for Cover Up General Barr. Also Barr refused under repeated direct questioning whether he had given the report to the White House, so he has obviously given it to the administration, affording them nice head-start at weaponizing it before anyone else gets even a redacted glimpse.

Today's 480 Minutes show will feature new songs by Amyl and The Sniffers (Melbourne, Australia), Corrections (London, England),  Daddy Long Legs (NYC and St. Louis, @ daddylongle6s), Ellis (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada), Fontaines D.C. (Dublin, Ireland, @fontainesdublin), Kompromat (?), Odonis Odonis (Toronto, Canada, @odonisodonis), Omni (Atlanta, GA, @omniatl), Palehound (Boston, MA, @palehound), Pip Blom (Amsterdam, The Netherlands, @pipblom), and Priests (Washington D.C., @priests_tweet).

"480 Minutes" - Why This Lie?

This week the President of the United States once again lied about where his father was born. Can someone explain to me why? Why this lie? The headlines refer to him "falsely saying" that his father was born in Germany and other such euphemisms for lying, but let's be real on this one. Surely he knows where his father was born, yet he has repeatedly stated something other than the truth. If he is actually unaware that his father was born in NYC, surely he shouldn't have the nuclear codes or any other responsibilities beyond eating hamberders with Alex Jones and firing people on TV for sport.

This week President Sociopath's appointees to the Supreme Court decided that the 8th Amendment to the Constitution (the one barring "cruel and unusual punishment") is less important than expediency.  They denied a death row inmate's request for an alternative method of execution to avoid needless suffering due to his rare medical condition. The majority's petty, dismissive excuse was the same as in their 5-4 decision a few weeks ago which prevented a Muslim inmate from having his imam present at his execution -- he should have made his request sooner. Gorsuch and Kavanaugh are heartless fucking barbarians. Please remember this when voting in 2020.

I really didn't think that "cruel and unusual punishment" wouldn't become a partisan issue, and I also didn't think that school lunch nutrition standards would be, either, having forgotten that Ronald Reagan suggested that schools should count ketchup as a vegetable as a way to navigate his cuts to federal subsidies. Now President KFC and his administration have decided to roll back health standards and feed kids more sodium and less whole grains because...freedumb?

There was some good news this week -- congress passed a resolution to block President WindmillCancer from continuing to aid Saudi Arabia's bombing campaign in Yemen. Also, his own party forced him to back down on his recent bluster about repealing and replacing Obamacare which would have ensured 20 million Americans lost their health insurance.

Today's 480 Minutes show will feature new songs by Michelle Blades (Paris via Panama) and The Rebel Set (Phoenix, AZ, @rebelset).
