"480 Minutes" - White Washing

This week the Republican Party spent the week trying to convince Americans that the least moral, least virtuous, least competent man ever to occupy the Oval Office is actually the messiah, chosen by God to save white Christian hetero suburban housewives from the poors and people of color coming for their virtue and valuables. The entire production rivaled unaired episodes of America's Most Wanted which ended up on the cutting room floor.

Speaker after speaker described a man whose best quality is that he's from Queens as their savior, the only person who can fix what is broken. Lies were accompanied by the ludicrous inclusion of featured speakers like the St. Louis couple facing charges for pointing firearms at peaceful protesters who dared to walk on "their" streets, a story so at odds with and yet so perfect for these times when white supremacy is being challenged.

The story line was about returning to a past when a white woman could accuse a black man of looking at her the wrong way and have that black man lynched, murdered. Meanwhile  professional sports teams and leagues came together to show Republicans what the rest of us think about the systemic racism and police brutality they pretend does not exist.

The contrast between the NY Post and Tucker Carlson white-washing the 17-year old murderer who killed 2 people in Kenosha, WI, while also justifying the shooting a man in the back 7 times in front of his children because (it turned out) he had a knife in his car could not be more stark.

The convention ended with a super-spreader event (like the biker rally in Sturgis, SD, with less leather) on the White House lawn where 1500 Republicans listened to #FatNixon prattle on about "law and order," seemingly oblivious to the fact that Americans have been in the streets for months protesting law enforcement methods, attitudes, and accountability. His followers seem to be unaware that this has been a bullshit political lever used by Reagan, Nixon, Goldwater, and all the way back to John Adams. Contrary to the portrayal of the U.S. during the RNC, violent crime rates have literally (not in the millennial sense) been dropping for decades, and the recent uptick is the responsibility of the #NoResponsibilityAdministration following 3+ years of non-stop demonizing immigrants, minorities, and non-Christians.

The conventions laid out the choice for Americans in November: do you stand for peace, equality, science, honor, and accountability, or do you stand for blatant lies, grifting, caging babies, vulgarity, and maintaining white power at any cost?

Today's show is live-hosted from 9am-5pm Eastern U.S. Time and feature new music by Alex The Astronaut (Sydney, Australia, @ATheAstronaut), The Beths (Auckland, NZ, @thebeths_tw), Bright Eyes (Omaha, NE, @BrightEyesBand), CHAI + Hinds (a collaborative single),  Corey Flood (Philadelphia, PA, @coreyfloodphl), DEHD (Chicago, IL), I Like Trains (Leeds, England, @iLiKETRAiNS), Old 97's (Boyd, Tyler, and Dallas, TX, @old97s), and Rey Pila (Mexico City, Mexico, @reypila).

Besides that good stuff there was a metric ton of crap submissions as well this week. You don't have to listen to those. You're welcome.
