Juneteenth, the celebration of the emancipation of slaves enslaved Americans, is now an official federal holiday, and it is being observed today. The actual date is June 19th (get it: Juneteenth?), which is when Union troops made their way to Texas to inform slaves there that they'd actually been freed under the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier. We may have some freedom songs in the mix today.
This weekend is also Father's Day here in the U.S., so we'd like to wish a happy Father's Day to all the good dads out there. This holiday is likely to go unmentioned during the show and there will likely be no intentional dad songs in the mix today. You see, your host's dad died in November, last Thursday would have been his birthday, and this week your host visited the cemetery for the first time since the burial. All of this complicates the celebration here this year.
