"480 Minutes" - new Mark Lanegan Band

480 Minutes will be another new music extravaganza this week following another week of submissions that topped the 600-song plateau.  Repeat after me: the music industry is thriving, the archaic lying cheating stealing record industry is dying.  The music industry is thriving, the archaic lying cheating stealing record industry is dying...

Today we will be giving away tickets for the Copenhagen band The Asteroids Galaxy Tour show at The Independent in San Francisco next Wednesday, 2/15.  Tune in and get in touch when you hear an AGT song and you might just win yourself a pair of tickets!  (Please note that you must be 21+ to win tickets/attend this show).  I'm going to be there, you should be too!  Buy tickets here.

Today we will debut tunes by Ariane Moffatt (Quebec, Canada), Audra Mae & The Almighty Sound (Los Angeles, CA), Bahamas (Toronto, Canada), Bears (Cleveland, OH), The Big Sleep (Brooklyn, NY), Coast Jumper (San Francisco, CA), Cursive (Omaha, NE), Frankie Rose (Brooklyn, NY), Heartless Bastards (Austin, TX), High Highs (New York, NY), Kellen & Me ( Fox River Grove, IL), Liftoff (Washington, DC), Mark Lanegan Band (Seattle, WA),  Opposite Sex (Dunedin, New Zealand), Papa (Los Angeles, CA), Pepe DeluxĂ© (Helsinki, Finland, New York, NY), Sharon Van Etten (Brooklyn, NY), Tennis (Denver, CO), and Water Liars (St. Louis, MO/Oxford, MS),

As always the show is hosted live and in-person from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Pacific Time.  Please get in touch during those hours with your requests, comments, and favorite Republican presidential candidate shocker of the week:

"480 Minues" - New Duke Spirit

We're back from the Thanksgiving holiday and all of that fabulous food and time off.  It was glorious, and I didn't overeat at either feast I attended...well, by Fast Bastard American standards, anyway.  While there were too many delicious things to list them all, I must give a shout out to the chocolate tart made by Hal Looby, which I have dreamt about all week.  Hal delivers his amazing baked goods to your door by bicycle (if you live in San Francisco), and you can score a couple on auction at the SF Bike Coalition's Winterfest event this Sunday.

As always this edition of 480 Minutes will highlight all of the new indie rock noise pop gems making their way into rotation next week (yes, you get a preview!).  Today we'll be debuting new music by Bleeding Knees Club (Gold Coast, Australia), Cloud Control (Sydney, Australia), Darkness Falls (Copenhagen, Denmark), David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels (Los Angeles, CA), Devin (Brooklyn, NY),  The Duke Spirit (London, England), Girl In A Coma (San Antonio, TX), Gotye (Melbourne, Australia), Highway Gimps (New York, NY), Hindi Zahra (Khouribga, Morocco), Horrid Red (Aachen, Germany/San Francisco, CA), Husband (Perth, Australia),  Kill Moi (San Francisco, CA), The Lost Sounds (Memphis, TN), Mikal Cronin (San Francisco, CA), Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds (Oasis), Okkervil River (Austin, TX), Serenades (Stockholm, Sweden), Willoughby (Los Angeles, CA), Wooden Wand (Lexington, KY), Zomby (England), plus music from the Minnesota Beatle Project Volume 3.  While in my not-so-humble (nor hard-to-elicit opinion) it is generally a mistake to cover Beatle songs, there are some credible ones here, featured bands include Cloud Cult and Tapes 'n Tapes, plus it's for a good cause (proceeds go to support music education in Minnesota), plus I love the album art:

We interrupt this message to bring you a shameless plug and ticket giveaway alert: BAGeL Radio Presents... Her Space Holiday at Bottom of the Hill along with Silver Swans and City Light on Saturday, December 16h, 2011.  Buy advance tickets here.   When you hear a song by any of the three bands during the live show (Fridays, 9a.m. - 5p.m. Pacific Time) today, 12/9, or 12/16, get in touch and you might win yourself a pair of tickets to the show. Consider yourself alerted.

"480 Minutes"

Last chance to help Team BAGeL Radio raise money in the San Francisco AIDS Walk that's happening this weekend. The team is walking for friends lost as well as friends currently living with HIV. Please pledge what you can in support of this effort at the Team BAGeL Radio page. Please do it now.

If you have not seen the iPhone 4 vs. HTC Evo cartoon, please take the next 3.5 minutes to do so. If you are in an office setting, headphones may be appropriate as it contains some salty language. Also, it is laugh out loud funny ("how old fashioned, he wrote out LOL!"). The video is embedded below.

We've got more tickets to give away for a series of Saturday night midnight movies with live music at the Bridge Theatre. The series is called Rocksploitation, and before each film Citizen Midnight ("cinema’s most obnoxiously amazing rock ‘n’ roll band") performs "songs from and inspired by these twisted cinematic masterpieces." Check out the film schedule below in the gig list. Full details at http://landmarkafterdark.com.

Now for the music...today 480 Minutes will feature new music from Eastern Conference Champions (Los Angeles, CA via Philladelphia, PA), Elsinore (Champaign, IL), Fading Collection (Seattle, WA), The Goodnight Loving (Milwaukee, WI), Grasscut (Brighton, England), Jaill (Milwaukee, WI), Menomena (Portland, OR), Mystery Jets (London, England), The Orbans (Fort Worth, TX), School Of Seven Bells (Brooklyn, NY), Snake! Snake! Snakes! (Phoenix, AZ), Stornoway (Oxford, England), The Streets On Fire (Chicago, IL), Upstairs Downstairs (San Francisco, CA), Wavves (San Diego, CA), and Young Galaxy (Montreal, Canada).

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Well, not next Friday, the 23rd, when there will be no new show, but certainly the following Friday (7/30) when there will be an all-new edition of 480 Minutes featuring City Light live and in person on the air from right here in the BAGeL Radio studio.

"480 Minutes" - Gimme Indie Rock!

Today will be another atypical edition of 480 Minutes -- sure, we'll unveil new music plus focus on recent playlist additions and sprinkle in some all-time great songs, but there will also be a focus on two bands that have both been around for 20+ years: Yo La Tengo and The Wedding Present. Why? I saw YLT at the Fillmore last night, and they reminded me how unbelievably awesome the are and have been for, oh, about 20 years now. There will be similar love for The Wedding Present, who have been similarly awesome for a similar length of time, and my beloved Weddoes will be here in San Francisco tomorrow (Saturday, April 24th, 2010) performing my favorite album of theirs, Bizarro, at The Independent.

Today's show will include new music by Avi Buffalo (Long Beach, CA), The Consulate General (Gothenburg, Sweden via SF), Frog Eyes (Vancouver, Canada), Kate Nash (London, England), Lemonade (Brooklyn, NY via SF), The Like (Los Angeles, CA), Pilot Cloud (Philadelphia, PA), The Radio Dept. (Lund, Sweden), The School (Cardiff, England), Setting Sun (Catskill Mountains, NY), and System And Station (Portland, OR).

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

"480 Minutes" - New Black Keys, New Young Pony Club

First some sad news: Malcolm McLaren, band manager (Sex Pistols, Adam & The Ants, Bow Wow Wow, New York Dolls), musician, fashion designer, and self-publicist extraordinaire died this week at age 64 after a battle with cancer.

On a more pleasant note, thanks to everyone who made it out to the April Rumble @ Milk Bar featuring Pepper Rabbit, Veil Veil Vanish, and Silver Swans. The bands were all good, the venue is pretty cool...now if only we could find a way to get people to come to the Upper Haight! FYI next month (5/5) the Rumble returns to Cafe du Nord.

Together with our friends at Soma FM, BAGeL Radio will be presenting an excellent show next Friday -- Love Is All (Gothenberg, Sweden), Princeton (Eagle Rock, CA), and Butterfly Bones (SF, CA) @ The Rickshaw Stop -- and you can win tickets during the show today. Get in touch when you hear a song by any of those bands during today's 480 Minutes program for chance to win a pair of tickets to the show, or buy tix in advance. April is a little ridiculous for shows in the Bay Area, but I'm going to bite the bullet and try to see every last one. Or at least the ones listed below in the Bay Area Gig eList.

Today 480 Minutes will debut new recordings from The Black Keys (Akron, OH), Roky Erickson With Okkervil River (Austin, TX), The Mynabirds (Omaha, NE), The Tallest Man On Earth (Dalarna, Sweden), The Secret History (New York, NY), Gil Scott-Heron (Jackson, TN), Jonsi (Iceland), Laura Marling (London, England), Fakeyourowndeath (San Francisco, CA), Kings Go Forth (Milwaukee, WI), and New Young Pony Club (London, England).

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

"480 Minutes" - new Frightened Rabbit

Today on 480 Minutes you can once again win tickets to see a special BAGeL Radio Presents... screening of the new White Stripes documentary, Under Great White Northern Lights, at the Roxie Theater. Get in touch whenever you hear a White Stripes song on BAGeL Radio between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time today. The screening is this Monday, March 15th.

Today was a rough week. For much of it when I listened to new submissions I hated everything I heard. When I listened again yesterday (with about 150 additional items in the weekly vetting playlist), I found tons of great stuff, so yes, indeed, there will be new playlist additions next week.

Today 480 Minutes will debut the aforementioned new playlist additions from Aloha (Cleveland, OH), Archie Bronson Outfit (Bath, England), The Besnard Lakes (Montreal, Canada), Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (Los Angeles), Broken Bells (New York, NY), The Bundles (New York, NY), Clogs (Brooklyn, NY), Drink Up Buttercup (Philadelphia, PA), Frightended Rabbit (Selkirk, Scotland), Gorillaz (London, England), The Hotrats (Oxford, England), Lawrence Arabia (Christchurch, New Zealand), Liars (New York, NY), The Morning Benders (Brooklyn, NY), One For The Team (Minneapolis, MN), Ortolan (Riverside, New Jersey), The Splinters (Berkeley, CA), Tunng (London, England), and Univox (Philadlephia, PA).

Please tune in today and every Friday to 480 Minutes between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Well, not next Friday (3/19), because we will be taking next week off to attend SXSW (South By Southwest), the annual music festival in Austin, TX. We'll be back the following Friday (3/26) with some new gems we stumble across at the festival.

If you are going to be in Austin for SXSW please stop by The Beauty Bar on Thursday, 3/18, where we will be co-hosting and DJing the 3rd Annual Bay Area Takeover from 11:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. with our friends at The Bay Bridged.
