"480 Minutes" - A Good Friday To All

If you have not already done so please sign this petition to Congress to help save internet radio and then share it with your circle of influence across social media, via e-mail, and any other way you know to reach people who listen to internet radio and care about new and niche music.

As we have reviewed over 1600 songs submitted in the past two weeks (and filtered it down to about 35), it is safe to say that if you tune in to BAGeL Radio on Fridays from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time for the live-hosted, award-winning  480 Minutes program during which we highlight our newest playlist additions, you are certain to hear songs, albums, and bands you have never heard before.  The show is rebroadcast Friday evenings beginning at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 5 a.m. and 3 p.m., and Sundays at 1 a.m. ET.

"480 Minutes" - Save Internet Radio

Please sign this petition to Congress to help save internet radio.  Again.  Yes, Small Webcasters like SomaFM are once again looking down the barrel of a gun (son of a gun, son of a bitch, getting paid, getting rich) and must explain to the people who set the royalty rates why independent internet radio is so important to keeping new and niche music alive.  The royalty rates are set every five years and, it should be noted, are so cripplingly high that no service can afford them -- not even the big players like Apple, Pandora, etc. who all cut side deals with the labels.

In the broader political context, I'll just come out and say it: conservatism is killing America.  Literally.  Bill Moyers does a fine, concise job spelling it out, writing, "And what Republican poobah has dared call out Grover Norquist, whose monomaniacal crusade against government has thrown public education into crisis, turned streets and highways into bottomless potholes, and produced stratospheric deficits?"

On top of that, Republicans in Congress are trying to deflect blame for the Flint water crimes from the Republican Governor of Michigan and onto the EPA.  They are blaming the environmental regulatory body which Republicans in Congress have been decimating for decades for lack of oversight, not the cost-cutting lunatic whose idea it was to switch the water supply and keep it that way for months when he knew it was poisoning people.  This type of obfuscation is fascinating to watch but brutally hateful and condescending.

We're still asking people to sign our petition to get the Small Webcasters Agreement extended.  If you have not yet, please do so, and please share it widely to help keep SomaFM and other small webcasters in the US on the air.  In what is being called "Bloody Sunday," the U.S. lost a bunch of small webcasters on Sunday due to the expiration of the SWA -- let's get this done before we lose any more.  Thanks!

SomaFM and all the other small, independent American webcasters are facing an existential crisis with the new Copyright Royalty Board ruling, specifically the lack of a Small Webcaster's Agreement under which we can continue to operate.

Without the aforementioned SWA, our goose is cooked, and I'm afraid a lot of new music and niche music genres will no longer have a platform on which to be discovered.

Before telling you about today's episode of the Fuzzy Road radio show I'd like to urge you to visit radiodiversity.org and sign up to receive information about how you can help stave off the culling of independent internet radio in the U.S.  We've been through this every few years when new royalty rates are announced.  In the past side-deals have allowed us little guys (who support new, diverse, often niche artists) to sustainably do what we do.  To that end we are hoping for an extension of the Small Webcaster Agreement and would appreciate your help pushing for it.

Help Save Independent Internet Radio

Please read and sign up for in formation to support American independent internet radio.  We are once again facing extinction unless we can get an extension of the Small Webcasters Agreement, which allows stations under a certain size (listener-wise) to pay a percentage of revenue to SoumdExchange instead of the crippling statutory rate recently determined by the Copyright Royalty Board.

The expiration of the Webcaster Settlement Act has left many small webcasters facing a steep increase in royalty rates and unsure of their future survival. 

We support fair and transparent payment to artists and rightsholders when their work is used. We also recognize that small broadcasters are vitally important to musical culture, whether it’s small community FM stations or online webcasters who program niche music and artists you might not hear elsewhere. Commercial FM radio is increasingly focused on narrow repetitive playlists due to consolidation in station ownership. By contrast, webcasting reflects far greater diversity—from cutting edge releases by contemporary artists to America’s rich and varied musical traditions. And unlike commercial FM, internet radio pays musicians and labels. 

We believe artists and small webcasters are on the same team. Let’s keep it that way!
We’re optimistic that a solution can be found to allow many small commercial webcasters to continue to operate, and ensure that great music continues to get played and artists continue to get paid—directly, transparently and fairly.
