(Final) Fuzzy Road - Episode #84

©  stevechapmanphoto.com
Hello and happy Tuesday.  I am pleased to announce that today's Fuzzy Road radio show will be live-hosted.  I'm not pleased to announce that today's Fuzzy Road radio show is possibly our final live-hosted show ever.

New royalty rates covering the next few years were recently announced.  Those rates, which small webcasters cannot possibly afford, take effect on 1/1/16.  Unless SoundExchange, which negotiates these rates on behalf of rights holders (usually record labels), extends a side agreement which for years has allowed small webcasters to pay a percentage of revenue model instead of the crippling statutory rates, most if not all small webcasters (including SomaFM) will have three choices: make direct deals with copyright holders (nearly impossible for stations that play as many different artists as BAGeL Radio), block streams to U.S. listeners, or shut down operations entirely.

Thanks to the late (and still incomplete) announcement of the new royalties we find ourselves on this date, December 29th, not knowing our fate.

We have been asked why we don't continue to broadcast as we have in the hopes that a settlement is reached, but there is great risk involved -- if we do and the agreement is not extended we could find ourselves on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars in royalties before the 2016 baseball season even starts.

But enough about IndependentInternetRadio-ageddon, let's talk music -- today's all-new Fuzzy Road radio show starts at 2:50 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time, so please tune in for your weekly fix of psych and garage rock.  Hopefully we will be back broadcasting to all of our loyal listeners before too many pages of the 2016 calendar are lost and gone forever.
Since today's show may be our last it's loaded with all-time greats including songs by The Easybeats (pictured, RIP Stevie Wright), The Fall, Thee Oh Sees, Groundhogs, Lime Spiders, Ty Segall, The Byrds, Motorhead (RIP Lemmy), and more.

The Easybeats
The show is live-hosted on Tuesday afternoons, with re-broadcasts beginning at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday and 4:50 a.m. Wednesday -- don't miss Fuzzy #84.

Fuzzy Road - Episode #83 (aka 2nd to last)

It's officially winter yet temperatures in NYC are in the upper 50s, birds are chirping, squirrels are still out and about (although they seem to be moving more slowly probably due to the extra month of pre-winter gorging) -- it's all so very confusing.

What's also confusing is the state of independent internet radio -- for the past several years we (BAGeL Radio/SomaFM) have been operating under a licensing deal called the Small Webcasters Agreement.  Said agreement, without which we would have been unable to operate, is set to end this month and there is no sign that the powers that be plan to extend the agreement.  No extension means that, when it expires, we will have to start blocking our streams to U.S. listeners.  We are devastated about this and are looking into working this out either directly with SoundExchange or through other means.  That said, with such a short time-frame, we don't want to spread false hope.  In other words, get your listening in to your favorite independent internet radio stations this week, because in 10 days they may cease to exist -- at least as far as U.S. listeners are concerned.

In better news, there's an all-new Fuzzy Road radio show starting at 2:50 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time today and another one next Tuesday, December 29th.  These will certainly be our final live-hosted programs of 2015, so please tune in for your weekly fix of psych and garage rock.  Hopefully we will be back wit more Fuzzy in 2016, and more Friday marathon episodes of 480 Minutes, but for right now (to quote the Magic 8-Ball): outlook not so good.

Today's show will feature The Pretty Things (pictured), The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Lyons & Malone, New Electric Ride, Beep Beep and The Roadrunners, Jeff The Brotherhood, and more.

The Pretty Things
The show is live-hosted on Tuesday afternoons, with re-broadcasts beginning at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday and 4:50 a.m. Wednesday -- don't miss Fuzzy #83.

Fuzzy Road - Episode #81

Today's Fuzzy Road is a little slap-dash, thrown together at the last minute as I was detained (50 minutes in a tunnel to go about 5 blocks!) which severely cut into show prep time, but I think it's going to work out.  You can judge for yourself starting at about 2:50 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time!

The Syn
The show will feature The Syn (pictured), Parquet Courts, The Boys Blue, Tame Impala, Morning Dew, Animal Collective, and more.

If you enjoy the show please tell your friends who like this music to  check out a rebroadcast beginning at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday and/or 4:50 a.m. Wednesday -- tune in for Fuzzy #81, it's going to be...something.

Fuzzy Road - Episode #80

It's the first week of December and all we've listened to (intentionally, anyway) has been The Beatles for almost a full week.  It's been glorious.

With that in mind it should come as no surprise that today's Fuzzy Road radio show will feature a Beatles song or three.  Do you have any idea how difficult it is to pare oneself down to three Beatles songs out of the 83 that we limited ourselves to this week?  It's about as difficult as understanding how anyone can still take Ted Cruz seriously after he suggested that the murderer who shot up a Planned Parenthood in Colorado last week is a transgendered liberal activist.  The same man who handed out anti-Obama literature to his neighbors and said, "No more baby parts!" during his arrest).  I wonder if Cruz, Fiorina, Trump, et al even understand the damage they are doing to the country with their bald-faced lies.

But I digress.

This latest 2-hour long installment of the Fuzzy Road radio show will feature music by The Beatles (duh!), Kurt Vile, Dukes of Stratosphear, The Growlers, The Fall, and more (Beatles).

Besides all of the great music your host got zero sleep last night, so that's sure to be entertaining.  For the listeners.

The Beatles final photo shoot, August 1969
Might this be the best Fuzzy to date?  It might, rabbit, it might.  Tune in at 2:50 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time to find out, and/or check out a rebroadcast beginning at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday and 4:50 a.m. Wednesday -- tune in for Fuzzy #80, it's going to be great.
